AustralianFootball.com Celebrating the history of the great Australian game
Just prior to the commencement of the 2015 football season the Royals were barred from the SAAFL because they had insufficient players to field two teams. Consequently, the club went into recess, although it is expected that this will only be temporary. A move to field a team in the Southern Football League’s C Grade competition fell through when the SFL clubs rejected the idea.
Over the course of their sixty-plus year history Wingfield Royals have spent time in five different competitions, with the highlight being their premiership triumph in the Norwood North District Football Association’s A1 Grade competition in 1972. Their sole amateur league flag was obtained in 1982 in Division Five. Opposed in the grand final by Australian National Railways Institute the Royals won with something to spare with scores of 19.19 (133) to 12.15 (87).
